- A father is angered his daughter for getting engaged without his approval, and refuses to take part in her wedding. His wife and the daughter of an acquaintance try various means to mend the situation.

- At the wedding reception of an old friend's daughter, Hirayama wonders why one of his old friends Mikami didn't show up. Actually Mikami was worried about his daughter Fumiko who had run away from home for his boyfriend, and he did not want to attend the blissfull ceremony. Mikami asks Hirayama to go and see how Fumiko is doing, and Hirayama visits a bar in town where Fumiko works as a hostess. While Hirayama shows his understanding of Fumiko and her boyfriend, he gets furious when Taniguchi, his daughter Setsuko's boyfriend, makes a surprise visit to ask for his permission to marry Setsuko, and he flatly refuses to approve it. Hirayama's wife Kiyoko criticize her husband as being inconsistant.
Meanwhile, when Hirayama is staying at an inn in Kyoto where he often visits, Yukiko, a daughter of the inn's owner and also a Setsuko's friend, consults him about her marriage talks…
