- Synopsis
- Otsuyu falls in love at first sight with the masterless samurai Hagiwara Shinzaburo. Filled with longing for him, Otsuyu despairs and finally dies. Hearing of this, Shinzaburo holds a memorial service for her, but when he does so the ghostly figures of Otsuyu and her wet-nurse Oyone appear. Holding a lantern decorated with a peony, they come to visit his house. Shinzaburo's manservant, Tomozo, goes to his master's bedroom and witnesses him embracing a skeleton. Shinzaburo pastes up special talismans around the house for protection. He also procures the image of a Buddhist deity from a priest and give it to his master to ward off all spirits of the dead. Now that she is barred from entering his house, the ghost of Otsuyu is grief-stricken. Wishing to help her mistress, Oyone goes to Tomozo to request that he take down the talismans. Finally, Tomozo's wife, Omine, agrees to make him do this on condition that they receive the large sum of one hundred gold pieces. After receiving the money from the ghost, the fate of the couple begins to go wrong without their knowing...
