Introduction
A young and passionate teacher Hisako Oishi arrives at an elementary school with only twelve students on a very tiny, remote island. The villagers are reluctant to accept her western way of life and her unusual teaching style at first, but soon are moved by the love that she pours into educating the twelve adorable students. However, she and her students are destined for tragedy as the world enters into World War II, and are separated. Some are killed, and some survive. The film follows the years that the teacher and the students go through during the difficult times of war, and finally a reunion where the survivors plan a get together with their loving teacher. The film won the 12th Golden Globes for Best Foreign Film in 1955 One of Kinoshita's best films, and outstanding performance by Hideko Takamine.
Synopsis
